However, there were significant differences that highlighted the two types of immigration. New immigrants were mainly men and unaccompanied by their families (Chapter 5, pg. 115). They hoped to make money and return to their societies since, unlike the old immigrants, they were not allowed to own land. Therefore, they opted to stay in towns or cities where they were industries where they worked as they were channeled to specific industries.
